How’d you make that? That has been the question!

I have never posted anything on Confessions of a Prop Junkie until early Friday morning. It was an inspirational picture using a quilt. I had no idea that the image I posted would be so inspiring. I’m really humbled. This image (with the hot air balloon) was shot early last year and just thought “oh, this would be cute to post”.

Some of you have asked how it came to be, so here it goes!

I wanted to do a hot air balloon but with a twist. So I started sketching out the vision I had in my head. I looked around at my unending pile of stuff in the stash of things. I consulted with Dana (my assistant who can do anything!) and we broke down the drawing piece by piece.

Off to Hobby Lobby we went. I knew I wanted a square base so we grabbed a square basket that had a texture I wanted. Then I spotted a smaller basket that would pose as the base of the balloon. I originally wanted to paper mache a huge ball to have for sometime but she recommended getting a 3 foot balloon. Okey dokey! Off to find 3 foot balloons! YES! Found them. They weren’t color I liked so I altered the final image to suit the look I wanted. Finally we picked out a red and white fabric and Dana sewed them together. I found a yellow scarf that would pose as the swap on the top of the balloon and used dowel to keep up the balloon top/base.

I encourage each of us artist to sketch ideas out. Figure out how to use materials in everyday life to execute the idea. You will be surprised as to what you come up with and hopefully inspire someone else!

Much love,

Nichole Marie

AMAZING – I am a prop junkie as well, although my friends call me a “prop whore” (isn’t that awful and very VERY opposite of me….. but true when it comes to props. I had an idea for a hot air balloon and did the same thing, sketched it out. Unfortunately the end result was not as magnificent as I had hoped. So, it is back to the drawing board and Hobby Lobby to get better fabric! I am going to get mine right if it kills me, or drives my hubby insane, whichever comes first! Here is mine just in case you wanted to take a look…… it needs help! LOLhttp://blog.amandastarphotography.net/?p=982

That is amazing!! You are so creative. 2 questions: How did you blow up the balloon and what was the dowel used for?

I ordered a 3 foot balloon last year and was going to do this for my session. Then I started thinking — how would I get helium and get it into a vehicle to my location.
Did you use helium?
