Q. Tell us a little about yourself in just two sentences and include a picture of yourself.

I am 29, the first to graduate high school and college. I have been married for almost 5 years and have a 22 month old sold, Atticus Bentley. My passions include nutrition, photography and food.

Q. What do you shoot with and what is your favorite lens and why?

I shoot with a canon 5D mark II. My favorite lens and only lens is the 50 mm 1.2. For now, I feel that the 50 gives me amazing images and I want to invest in other areas of my business. I do plan to buy a lot more lenses later on.

Q. When did you start shooting for fun and then move to shooting professionally?

I started shooting for fun in 2006. I started shooting professionally in 2008.

Q.  Are you formally taught or self taught?

Both. But I do not believe one can teach themselves everything to be truly successful. I have taken 2 workshops: Leslee Mitchell and Keri Meyers. Both were tremendously helpful.

Q. What is your specialty and how did you decide to specialize in that area of photography?

I specialize in newborn photography. The same month I officially opened up my business, I discovered Tracy Raver via The Today Show. After that, I knew without a doubt what I wanted to do. I was determined to be good at it.

Q. How many sessions are you shooting a month?

I shoot about 6-10 newborns a month and 8 other sessions a month.

Q.  On average how long to do you spend editing each session and do you listen to music while editing or just enjoy the quiet?

I edit in the quiet, mainly because I edit just outside of my son’s bedroom and he is usually sleeping. I spend about 2-3 hours editing each session.

Q. What is the best marketing tool that works for you or was a total waste of time?  Do you advertise in print?  Do you offer referral bonuses?  If yes, please share a little.

I just began advertising on a local website. I also do Google ad-words. Word of mouth and Google have been the two best ways to get clients.

Q. What do you do to “stand out” from surrounding photographers that you’re competing with?

I put my blinders on (that is, I don’t look at local’s work) and focus on me. This keeps me from accidentally being inspired by something local.

Q.What was your biggest mistake and how did you fix it?

I should have taken a newborn workshop sooner. I hosted a workshop in May 2011 for Keri Meyers. She rocks!

Q. Please share your favorite image and tell us what makes this your favorite?

The image below is my current favorite image. I love the lighting, the colors, the hat, and how perfectly posed he is. I love the blur, too.

Q. Can you show us your shooting space?  If you are shooting inside can you show a simple pull back shot or lots of images if you have a large studio.  If you shoot on location please share an image of you favorite location.

I shoot out of my home. Here are some pull backs:

Q. Is there anything you would like to promote?  Maybe a mentoring you offer or any side projects.

Keep your eyes peeled for future mentoring opportunities.

Q. Please share an image of your Prop stash!  This doesn’t have to be an organized space just an image showing off your addiction.

Jennie, you should seriously be ashamed of those twin images. Why on earth would you make some poor mother choose between so much awesomeness?! I hope she wallpapered her house with them. Super nice work :)

I have a question where on earth did you find that cube thing that would be perfect for my props as well. Good idea. Thanks!

Niina - June 27, 2011 - 11:55 pm

I love how she has used simple props for her stunning photos! The colors are so soft!
