I am SUPER excited to share Jennifer’s work with you all!  She is one amazing lady that can really shoot it all. I truly aspire to be a photographer of her caliber.

Now on to the Q&As …

——————–

Q. Tell us a little about yourself in just two sentences.

I’m a Mom of 2 little boys (ages 5 and 7) and a wife of 11 years. I love my family to pieces and I also love to shop.

Q. What do you shoot with and what is your favorite lens and why?

I shoot with a Canon 5d Mark ii. My favorite lens used to be the 28-70L but it needs to go to the doctor so I started using my 50mm 1.4 most of the time instead and really love it! I also LOVE the 135L.

Q. When did you start shooting for fun and then move to shooting professionally?

It all happened so fast. I bought my first SLR in December 2005 and by December 2006 I had a studio. I didn’t ever actually plan on becoming a photographer, it just kind of happened. It was definitely meant to be and I feel so blessed.

Q. Are you formally taught or self taught?

Self taught -although I have taken various workshops over the years to improve my skills.

Q. What is your specialty and how did you decide to specialize in that area of photography?

WELL- I am kind of a do it all gal. I would say I specialize in babies and kids (I have ALWAYS been a baby lover) but I shoot quite a few seniors each year as well as few weddings.

Q. How many sessions are you shooting a month?

Around 20

Q. On average how long to do you spend editing each session and do you listen to music while editing or just enjoy the quiet?

I probably spend 2 -3 hours per session and I actually watch TV while editing. My computer is in my living room HA!

Q. What is the best marketing tool that works for you or was a total waste of time? Do you advertise in print? Do you offer referral bonuses? If yes, please share a little.

I have never really marketed much. The only things I have done are booths at the local county fairs. Facebook has been the best marketing by far though and it’s FREE. I don’t do any print advertising or referral bonuses.

Q. What do you do to “stand out” from surrounding photographers that you’re competing with?

PROPS and VARIETY. Not everyone with a nice camera will invest hundreds of thousands of dollars into a gorgeous studio and all of the props, backgrounds etc.

Q. What was your biggest mistake and how did you fix it?

My biggest mistake was not charging enough to cover my time and expenses. I think most photographers just starting out kind of pull a number out of nowhere when it comes to pricing but they honestly don’t take into consideration all that goes into running a business. Taxes, Rent, Props, Equipment, Daycare….etc etc.

Q. What is your favorite part of being a photographer?

The connections I have with my clients and being able to capture the most special moments in their lives.

Q. Please share your favorite image and tell us what makes this your favorite?

That is HARD. I guess I would say this is one of my most favorite images right now. I love it because it turned out just as I had envisioned it– the posing, light and props are all just yummy! PLUS it’s my Grandma’s old doll carriage which makes it extra special.

Q. Can you show us your shooting space?

Sure– my studio is about 2000 sq feet and is on the same property as our house. We have about an acre of land so I also have some outdoor set ups in the back yard.

Q. Can you share pictures of your prop stash with us?

Q. Is there anything you would like to share with us? Maybe mentoring you offer or any side projects.

I do offer very limited 1:1 mentoring and teach a variety of techniques – seniors, multiple studio lighting set ups, natural lighting, newborns, and children.
