How to add drama by adding light

This is a great technique to use to add drama to your image. You can add a light in an old house to make a spooky effect or add it to a lantern as I did with this photo shoot or use it in your own creative way. It helps to have an idea of theme for your shoot that would make sense. For instances with this shoot I wanted to do a Bonnie and Clyde inspired session we started out at a cabin with a car that we made look like it was broke down. Then I wanted them to make there “getaway” with a boat. I decided to use a lantern as a prop and adding a real light just wouldn’t photograph like I wanted it to. So I wanted to add a glow to my lantern.

First I shoot my image with a little darker exposure then normal. I just feel like it helps make the image a little more dramatic. Then a open it up in Photoshop. I touch up my skin then adjust tones to get the look i want for my image. Then you make a copy of your background. You should have two layers in photo shop keep them open then go to filter then to render and then lens-flare. Click it and you should see a small screen that will give you several choices. After you select your option and move it to position on the screen. Click on and you should still have two layers open for lanterns I go in and brush out and of the light that I don’t want like the little circles. I also take the top layer and dial back the opacity to get a soft looking glow. Here are a few more examples of when I have used this technique.
